STAINED GLASS

Butterfly Image psd can be Downloaded here.

Step 1

Choose an image and convert to line art drawing.  You can convert almost any image to line art by creating a new layer and using a brush to trace the contours.  In this example we are using a butterfly.

Step 2

Create a new layer above the background layer and below the butterfly layer.  Call this layer 'painting'.  You can give the butterfly color in 2 ways: either zoom in and use a brush or in the larger areas you can click on the outline layer, select the magic wand and click on an area of the butterfly and use the paint bucket.  Be sure to return to the painting layer to add the color. (You will notice that I omitted to give this butterfly a realist body - but I corrected it later).

Step 3: Adding Texture

With your 'Painting' layer highlighted go to Filter/Texture/Texturizer and select Sandstone. Scale up to 200% and enter 7 for relief.

Step 4: Glass

Go to Filter/Distort/Glass and enter a value of 3 for distortion, 15 for smoothness and select Frosted as the texture.  The result of these settings depends on the size of your image, so play around with them until you get something you like.

Step 5: Leading the Butterfly

You might want to turn of the 'Painting' layer, prior to this step so that you can see the effect take place on the outline.  Double click on the outline layer to bring up the layers styles.

Check Bevel and Emboss, Inner Bevel and gloss contour to Half Round.  Go to stroke, change color to Black, Size 2, Opacity 25%, Position - Outside.  Click ok.  If you turned of your painting layer, turn it back on now.   Save this file.  Turn off the background layer and merge the outline and painting layers.  Save this file under a different name to your layers file.

Step 6: Lead

Place a horizontal and vertical guide at 250 marks. Create a new layer above the background layer.  Place your mouse at the centre of the guides, and using the marquee tool, hold down the alt key to draw a circle from the centre.

Step 7

Go to Edit/Stroke, color black, size 5 pixels. You might have to reposition your butterfly following this.

Step 8

Using a hard, 5 pixel brush, we are now going to draw some more lead.  First outline your canvas in black, holding down the shift key as you do this gives you a straight line.

Using the same brush, begin drawing your other lines to make a stained glass effect.  Remember to connect all lines back to themselves because we will be using the magic wand later to recolor some of these sections.  If you want to include straight lines, click where you want the line to start and then holding down the shift key, click where you want it to end.

In this example I opted for straight lines (see another example below, using freeform lines).

Step 9: Glass

Create a new layer above the background layer. Set foreground to a grey color and background to white.  Go to Filter/Render/Clouds.

Step 10

Filter/Noise/Add Noise.  Enter a value of 5, Gaussian, monochromatic checked.

Step 11

Filter/Blur/Motion Blur and blur diagonally, by setting the angle at -48 and the distance at 15 pixels.

Step 12

Filter/Distort/Ocean Ripple.  Ripple Size 7, Magnitude 15 (this is something you can play with).

Step 13

Image/Adjust/Hue & Saturation.  Check colorize box and set hue and saturation.  I used saturation at 46 to get this result.

Step 14

Now for some fun :O-)  Create a new layer between the glass layer and the lead layer (this way you can always go back and edit color without affect original glass).  This step involves clicking back and forth between the lead layer and the glass layer.  Highlight the lead layer and select a section of your glass you would like to edit for color.  Click back on the Glass layer and fill this selection with the color of your choice at approx 25% fill opacity using the paint bucket tool.  Ctrl+D to deselect once filled.  Click back on lead layer and make next selection etc.  Make sure you fill on the Glass layer.

Final Step

Double click on your 'Lead' layer to bring up the layer styles.  Select Bevel & Emboss and change contour to half round.

Finished example below, along with another demonstrating freeform lines, and different distortion level in the ocean ripple.

Have fun with this one!  Luv & Light - Dreamcatcher.
