Brush Metal Text

This tutorial was created to answer a News Group question: How can I create text like in the logo for SPY KIDS.

1. Open a new image by clicking File=>New

  • 600 wide
  • 400 high
  • 144 ppi
  • white
  • rgb

2. Type in the text you want, here it will be S P Y. Be sure you put spaces between the letters to start.

  • All caps
  • 80 pt
  • Arial Black
  • Black

3. On the Layers Panel, right click on the Text Layer and select RASTERIZE.

4. Magnify your image to about 300 or 400 % using the magnify tool.

5. Select the marquee tool that is the horizontal single row marquee tool. Click in the center top of the P (about one fourth down from the top). Holding down the shift key, click one pixel below the selection. Repeat one pixel below.  Still holding down the shift key, click the pixel above the selection. Repeat one pixel above. You now should have a 5 pixel high selection. Click delete.

5. Select the rectangular marquee tool and highlight the P Letter only. Click on the move tool and using the arrow key, nudge the P over to just touching the S. Do the same for the Y, moving it so it just touches the P.

6. Inset a New Layer called Layer 1. Fill this layer with Light Grey.

7. Click Filter=>Noise=>Add Noise.

  • 40 %
  • Uniform
  • Monochromatic

8. Select Filter=> Blur=>Motion Blur

  • angle = 0

10. Click Image => Adjust =>Hue Saturation

  • Check COLORIZE

  • Hue = 40

  • Saturation = 50

  • Lightness = +25

11.While Layer 1 is highlighted,  Hold your control key down and hit the Letter G. Use the Move tool to adjust where your metal texture is placed.

12.  Double click back on your Spy layer to bring up your blending options/Layer style.  Click on the Stroke layer and set the stroke

  • 2 pixel size,

  • outside

  • Normal

  • Opacity 100%

  • Black color

13. Click on the Bevel and emboss of the Blending options/Layer Styles.

  • Inner Bevel

  • Depth= 100%

  • Size == 5 px

  • Soften= 0

    Click ok.

14. Turn off the eye on the background layer. Click back on the top layer and click Layer=>New=>Layer (layer 2).  Click Ctrl, Alt, shift E to merge your layers into the new layer.

14. Click Filter=>Render=>Lens Flare.

  • Set cross hair over the top of the S

  • 105 mm Prime.

15. Using the airbrush tool, apply a crosshair reflection to the same area of the lens flare.

16. Make sure your background layer is off, or not visible, then click on your top layer, and select Layer=>Merge Visible.
