Combined Path to Custom Shape
1. New image 2X3 white, 300 ppi


2. Click image=> rotate=> 90 degrees cw
 

3. Type in the word ECLIPSE with

  • Georgia
  • regular
  • 30 pt
  • black
  • smooth
  • center
  • vertical scale = 150%



4. Add text warp as

  • arc
  • horizontal
  • -70

5. Use your move tool to align the text on center bottom.
 

6. Click layer=> type=> new path

7. Turn off your type layer.

8. Open your path palette. Double click your work path and save the path as name = Eclipse

9. Select your ellipse shape tool set to

  • paths
  • Ellipse
  • unconstrained proportions
  • Add to paths


10. Holding down your shift key drag out an ellipse just above the eclipse text. Holding the shift key while drawing keeps the ellipse proportional. To move the ellipse hold down the shift AND space bar at the same time. To continue drawing let go of the space bar.

11. Click on the paths pallet and click again outside of the eclipse path to set it. Click back on the eclipse path to select it. With your ellipse tool still selected in your tool bar draw another ellipse inside of the first ellipse using the same settings in the option bar BUT this time you will change the add to path area icon to EXCLUDE overlapping path areas.


Drag out your second ellipse. Notice on your path pallet and on your eclipse path the inside ellipse thumbnail is grey. * To set your drawing you can also click outide of the drawing with your path selection or direct selection tool.

12. With your path tool (dark arrow) selected in your tool bar hold down your shift key and click on the inside ellipse and then the outside ellipse. Up in the options bar click on combine. Click on your paths pallet and again outside of your eclipse path to set it. Click back on your
eclipse path.

13. In the tool bar select your direct selection tool (shift +A). Next select your pen tool >add anchor tool. Click anywhere on the OUTSIDE ellipse line 3 times about an 1/8 inch apart. The area will be around the width of the top of the letter E in the Eclipse text.
This will add 3 anchors. Click on A ( keyboard shortcut) or your DIRECT SELECTION tool and then on the MIDDLE anchor and hold down your mouse to drag out a point. Continue doing this around the outside ellipse until you have points drawn to your preference. Click outside the eclipse path to set your drawing. You have to have 2 anchors on either side of the middle anchor to drag it into a point.

Define Custom Shape

14. In your layers pallet turn off your eye to remove the fill in the text Eclipse. Up in the menu click on Edit >define custom shape.
Name it Eclipse.

15. To view your new shape open a new canvas. Choose a color for foreground and background in your tool bar.

16. In your tool bar select your custom shape tool (keyboard shortcut U). Up in the options make sure your SHAPE LAYERS icon is selected.
In the middle of your options bar click on the small carrot (arrow) beside the word shape
Scroll to the bottom and click on your new custom eclipse shape.
Drag out your new shape on the canvas. You also can also choose the shape options beside the small star icon up in your options bar
to change your drawing size and proportions.
