Lunar Eclipse

1. Click file => new

  •  200 by 200
  • 72 RGB white background

2. Open the image Moon.gif and select all. click Edit copy. On the new canvas you just made Click Edit=> Paste

3. Click View => Show => rulers. Make sure the ruler in pixels by right clicking it to select unit. Left click on the ruler and drag the guide line down on top of the moon's top edge. Do the same to the left side. Drag the line from the left side as shown.

4. Click Layers=>new=>layer. Name it mask.

5. Hit your D key. Click Edit=> fill. Set to foreground, normal, 100%

6. Select the elliptical marquee and set to  fixed size of 100px by100px and center the selection over the moon.

7. Click the mask button on the bottom of the layers panel. Invert layer by clicking Image=> adjust => Invert. Right click on the mask and select set as selection. Click select=>inverse.

8.  Click layer=>new=>layer. Name it fill.  Go to edit=>fill and set as above.

 

 

9. Click back on the mask layer. Turn the eye off on layers fill and layer1.

 

 

10. Click Layer=>new=>layer call it  halo

 

11. Click Edit=>fill and leave the settings as they are.

 

12. Click Layer => layerstyle =>outerglow

  • techniques = softer
  • Spread = 3%
  • size = 10 pixels

13. Click Layer=> New => Layer and call it Halo1

14. Click Edit => fill. Then click layer=>layerstyle=>outer glow

  • techniques = softer
  • Spread = 3%
  • size = 50 pixels

15. Turn off the eye on halo1

16. Add a layer, fill with black. Click Filter=>render=>lens flare.

  • brightness=121 (or less)
  • lens = 35 mm prime.

17. Set layer to screen and move the flare to the edge of the glow.

 

18. Click the button on the bottom of the tool bar to Switch to Image Ready.


19. Open your animation palette by clicking windows=>show animation


20. There will already be one frame on the animation palette.

Duplicate this frame by clicking the icon next to the trashcan on the bottom of the animation palette.

 

21. Click on the first frame and click on the move tool. Use your arrow keys to move (nudge) the fill layer circle to the left so that it is to the left of the moon image and not available. Turn off the lens flare and both the halo's.


22. Click on frame 2 and then your move tool. Turn off the lens flare and halo 1 and halo. Nudge the fill layer using the right arrow key to move the image on the fill layer to the right so that it clears the moon.


 

23. Click back on the first frame. Click on the small arrow on the top right hand side right under the X. select Tween.



24. Set the number of frames to add 10 then next frame
25. On the animation panel, Click on frame 6. Add a frame here, called frame 7. Turn on the halo 1, halo and the lensflare on frame 7.

26. Set the timing for each frame as follows:

  • Frame 1 : 5 seconds
  • frames 2-6:  0.1 seconds
  • Frames 7: 1 seconds
  • Frames 8-12: 0.1 seconds
  • Delete frame 13.
