The Evil Eye From the Lord of the Rings Two Towers

1. Create a new image by clicking file=> New and set the image to 300 pixels wide by 300 pixels high, RGB, 72 ppi, white,

2.  Insert a layer called "yellow blur". Using your elliptical marquee tool set to a fixed size or 100 pixels by 100 pixels to create a circular selection on the new layer. Select your gradient tool for a radial gradient. Set the colors as follows: foreground color  yellow, hex #FFFF00 and select the preset gradient of foreground to clear. Draw a gradient from the center of the selection to the border. Click Edit=> Transform=> scale. Scale it to height = 135%  width = 240%. Click Select => All. Click Edit=>Cut. Hold your shift key down and click Edit=>Paste.


3. Insert a new layer. Using your elliptical marquee tool set to a fixed size or 100 pixels by 100 pixels to create a circular selection on the new layer. Select your gradient tool for a radial gradient. Set the colors as follows: foreground color red, hex #FF0000 and background colors yellow-oragnge, hex #FFCC33. Draw the gradient from the center of the selection to the edge of the selection.

Click Filter=> Texture=> Grain. Set the grain to the following:

  • intensity = 100
  • Contrast = 100
  • Grain type = clumped.

4. Click Edit=> Transform=> Scale. Set the scale to width of 200%, leaving the height at 100%, making sure the image is still on your canvas.

5. Click Select=> All. Click Edit=>cut. Hold down your shift key and Select edit =>paste 3 times. Turn off all the layers except the background and layer1. The treatments are listed for each layer, just turn off the layer you finish and turn on the layer you need to work on.

Layer1: Click Filter=> Distort=> Ripple

  • amount = 999
  • size = medium

Layer 2: Click Filter=> Distort=> Ripple

  • amount = 250
  • size = Large

Layer 3: Click Filter=> Distort=> Ripple

  • amount = 500
  • size = Large

6. Apply a radial blur  to EACH of layers 1, layer 2, and layer 3 by clicking Filter=> Blur=> Radial Blur when on layer 1.  Set the blur to the following:

  • Amount = 100%
  • Method = Zoom
  • Quality = best.

Click on layer 2, and hit Control key F. Click on layer 3 and cntrl F.

7. Set your elliptical marquee tool to width of 250 height of 250 and click in the upper right corner of the image canvas. Click view=>New guide. Set the guide to vertical 230. On the marquee option bar press the link for "Intersect with selection". Take the cross hair of the cursor and click in the intersection of the top of your canvas and the vertical guide. This should leave you with a cats eye shaped selection. 

Insert a new layer called cats eye. Fill this layer with whatever color is in the foreground. Click Select => All. Click Edit cut. Then hold your shift key down and hit Edit=>Paste.

Open up your layer blending options. Under Advanced blending options, Set the opacity for your fill to 0% and check knockout= deep. Deselect all by clicking edit=>deselect.

 

7. Control click on the cats eye layer. Add a new layer called stroke. Click Edit=> Stroke. Set the stroke to

  • 5 pixel
  • color = hex #FF6600
  • Location =outside
  • Normal
  • 100 %


8. Click Select=> Inverse. Click on the orange stroked layer. Click Filter=> Blur=> Motion blur. Set the angle to 0, distance to 10 pixels. Click select=> Deselect.
Duplicate this layer by right clicking on the layer and selecting duplicate.

9. Click Image=>canvas size. Set the height to 600 pixels, width to 300 pixels. Set the current canvas to the center top of the selected area.

10. Click on your background layer. Set the foreground color to a medium blue, hex #333399, and set the background to a dark blue, hex #000033. Click Filter=>Render=>Clouds.

11. Add a layer just above your background layer. Add new guides by clicking view=> new guide set at the following locations:

  • Vertical 30 pixels
  • Vertical 150 pixels
  • Vertical 270 pixels
  • Horizontal 150 pixels
  • Horizontal 500 pixels

.12. Use your pen tool to click in the following points in this order:

  • 0 across, 600 down
  • 30 across, 150 down
  • 150 across, 500 down
  • 270 across 150 down
  • 300 across, 600 down
  • 0 across, 600 down

 

13. Use your convert point tool to double click your point at 150 across 500 down. Drag the handles out to adjust the curve on these points and make a nice smooth inside curve . Click on the paths layer. Right click on the path and set path to selection. Click back on the layers panel and turn the pen layer off.

14. Insert a layer called wall. Click Edit=>Fill and set to 50% grey. Click Filter=> texture=> Textureizer. Select Load Texture and select Rust Flakes.psd from your presets/textures folder. Set it to

  • Scaling= 50
  • Relief = 6
  • Light direction = Top

 

15. Click Filter=>Distort=> Ocean Ripple.

  • ripple size = 15
  • magnitude = 4

     

16. Duplicate this wall layer by right clicking it and selecting duplicate. Turn the duplicate off. Click back on the original wall layer. Select your move tool. Click Edit=>Transform=>skew. Grab the center bottom handle of the bounding boxes and move it so that the lower left handle is at the 30 pixel vertical guide.

 

17. Click Image=>Adjust=>Brightness/contrast. Set the brightness to -40. Turn the wall copy layer on.

 

 

18. Switch to image ready.

19. If you decide to save this full size, you will want to Use your slice tool to slice your image into three parts. Slice number one and three are the areas which will not change at all for the animation. Otherwise resize your image. I resized to 200 wide and got a reasonable size animation.

20. Open your animation panel. Turn off layers 2 and 3.

Click the link to duplicate current frame. Turn off layer 1 and turn on layer 2.

Click the link to duplicate the current frame. Turn off layer 2 and turn on layer 3.

Click the link to duplicate the current frame. Turn off layer 3 and turn on layer 2.

Set the time for each frame to 0.1 seconds. Publish the image as gif, setting the colors for the animation at at least 32 colors.
