Extracting a Solid Image

Masks and channels part2- This tutorial follows along as supporting activities for Chapter 6 of Classroom in a Book. Get it! Learn It! Live it!

Extracting an image

1. Open the grass image.

2. Right Click layer and select duplicate layer. Click Image=> adjust=> levels to add contrast to this washed out image.

3. Turn original background off by clicking the eye icon in the layers palette

4. Click filter > extract


5. Select the edge highlighter tool, B. Since you can refine and preview the extraction as many times as you wish, choose a large brush size: 20 from the extract options on the right.

6. Zoom by ctrl shift click or use wheel.

7. Outline the feathered top of the grass brushing right over the feathery area.

8. Now switch to a brush size 5 to do the stem. Use can use zoom  by pressing spacebar with ctrl and click to zoom on the stem. Use the hand tool H to reposition the image

9. Toggle to the eraser E to erase areas you strayed on and toggle back to edge highlighter tool B to continue highlighting.

10. Use the fill tool, paint bucket G to fill the areas inside the highlighting switch to a finer brush

11. Once you have filled the center area of the foxtail, click the preview button.

12. You can turn on the highlighter back on by checking the "show Highlighter" box. You can select original from the preview box, and select "show fill" This will allow you to refine your extraction.

 

13. When you are happy with your extraction preview, click ok on the extraction window.

14. Click File=> save.

Adding the grass to your pelican image

1. Open your Pelican image and position both images so they are both visible.

2. Select your move tool V. Grab the foxtail image with your move tool and drag it to your egret canvas. It will create a new layer.

3. Click edit=> transform=> Scale. Drag the handles while holding down shift to constrain proportions until the image is about 2/3 the height of the canvas.

4. Hit enter to apply the transformation.

5. Set the layer opacity to 70%
