The File Browser 1

  • You will need this file to complete this lesson. Unzip it and save it to your hard drive.

1. Open the file browser by Clicking file=> browse to open the Photoshop file browser. The short cut is Ctrl shift O. Another way is to open it from the palette well.

2. Drag the file browser out of the well and place in the center of your Photoshop work area

3. Select the maximize button in the file browser window to go full screen with the file browser.

4. Press tab to remove the other toolbars and palettes so we are only working on the file browser. Remember the tab key will bring them back too.

5. You will see 4 panes plus the file path drop down for the address display. Notice the following areas.

  • Navigation pane or tree pane
  • Preview pane
  • Information pane
  • Palette menu button
  • Thumbnails pane
  • Address area

6. The bottom of the Thumbnails pane you will see several items

  • Size thumbnails
  • flyout menu 1
  • flyout menu 2
  • rotate image
  • trash

7. Flyout 1 has many options to show on the status bar of the file browser. Flyout 2 is a list of preview sizes.

8. Locate the lesson files for this lesson. Select the first image which is the clown image. On the left there is a preview pane. Look at the information or meta data pane. Review the information ab out this photo. Was it taken at the same time as the glass picture? The metadata information contains information on the camera used, the settings, flash or not, etc.

Each of these panes can be resized to fit your purpose by grabbing the edges where they touch. The preview will resize in proportion.

9. To open an image in Photoshop from the file browser:

  • With the first image highlighted from this folder, hit your enter key.
  • Double click on the image thumbnail.
  • double click on the preview pane

10. Opening multiple files: Click the first image in a series. Hold your shift key down and double click the last in a series.

11. Find the last image in the folder. It is dark and undesirable. Highlight it by itself. Hit the delete icon on the bottom of the thumbnails palette. This brings up the delete dialogue box. Deleting will eliminate files off the hard drive. If you drag the thumbnail to the trashcan, you will delete file without dialogue box confirmation. Be careful. It will be gone then.
