Request a Tutorial

Flaming Text

1. Create a new image by Clicking File New.

  • width 550
  • height 400
  • Mode RGB color
  • Contents: White

 

2. Select Black for your color and using the fill tool , fill the background with black. (or Control-I)

3. Clcik the Type tool and type the word Flame on the stage with these settings 

  • Font: Times New Roman
  • Size: 24 pt.
  • Color: White

4. Using the Move tool (V) center the and place the base of text about 2/3 the way down the canvas

5. While font layer is highlighted click the menu Layer => New => Layer called Layer 1.

6. Highlight layer 1 and click together Ctrl + Alt + Shift + E. This merges all the visible layers into the new layer 1.

7. While layer 1 is active Click Edit =>Transform => Rotate 90 => CCW.

   

8. With Layer 1 active go to Filter => Stylize=> Wind. Wind should be set to the default. Repeat this step a total of 4 times.

9. Again with Layer 1, click Edit => Transform => Rotate 90 => CW.

10. With Layer 1 click Filter => Blur => Gaussian Blur. Set the blur to 7.5 and click ok.

  

11. Click Image Adjust, Hue/Saturation, set the following settings and click ok.

  • Check Colorize box
  • Hue to 50 (orangish yellow)
  • Saturation to 100

12. Right click on layer 1 and select duplicate layer.Call it layer 1 Copy.

13. Click Adjust, Hue/Saturation, set the following settings and click ok.

  • Set Hue to -40 or 50 (red)

14. While Layer 1 Copy is highlighted, set the mode to Color Dodge.

 

15. Merge Layer 1 Copy onto Layer 1 by selecting Layer 1 copy and then the menus Layer => Merge Down.

16. With the new Layer 1 active, Select Image, Liquefy

  • Brush Size to 30
  • Brush Pressure to 40

    Holding down your mouse, drag the initial flame shapes up from the edges of the text areas, wiggling the drag as you go. Click ok.

17. Click once again the Image Liquefy.

  • Brush Size 15
  • Brush Pressure 35.

18. Duplicate the Text layer by right clicking it and select duplicate layer.

19. Move the Text Copy above the Layer 1 by dragging it above layer 1. Then click The D key and then hold down the Alt key and hit backspace to color this text Black..

20. Right click on the liquefied flame layer by right clicking it and select duplicate. Drag that layer above the  Text Copy Layer. Select mode Screen.

21. Select the mask button on the bottom.
2. Select the gradient tool ,which is selected by holding downt he fill tool and selecting gradient.  Insure you are set for a linear gradient, top color white, bottom color black. Draw a gradient from the top of the text to the bottom of the text on the mask layer.

23. Select the smudge tool. . If it is not visible on the tool bar click the 7th tool down on the left to find it as one of the options.

  • Brush 35 pixel soft edge
  • pressure 70%.
  • Using the smudge tool, drag the flames down around the letters so it looks like the flames are coming from the front also.

24. Insert a new layer above this layer by clicking Insert =>New => Layer

25. Merge all the layers to a new layer, called layer 3 at the top of the stack by highlighting layer 3 and holding down the Ctrl + Alt + Shift + E key.

26. On layer 3 Set mode to Screen and Opacity to 50%

27. While layer 3 is highlighted, click Filter => Blur => Gaussian blur, set to 50 pixels.

28. Create a new layer 4 on top of all the layers by click ing on the top layer, then insert => New => Layer.

29. Merge all your layers into the new layer by clicking Ctrl + Alt + Shift + E.

30. Set the mode for Layer 4 to Screen and set the opacity to 60%.

31. Click Edit => transform => flip verticle.

32. Select your move tool and nudge layer 4 up to meet the bottom of the text. USe the EDIT => Transform => Scale to adjust the height of the reflection.
