The Magnetic Lasso tool

The magnetic lasso is used to select out multicolored irregular shaped items from your image.  In this tutorial you will use the following image:

1. Open your image in Photoshop. Right click on the background layer and select duplicate background.

2. Select your magnetic lasso tool. To find it you will need to hold down your mouse on the lasso And select the magnetic lasso.

3. Click once on the edge of the flower and then just guide the magnetic lasso around the edge. Click at apexes and centers of acute angles to help guide the lasso in the correct direction. When you get back to the beginning, just double click to close the selection.

4. Click the add layer mask button on the bottom of the layers panel.

5. Click on the background layer and right clicking, select duplicate background to create background copy 2

6. While background copy 2 is highlighted, Click Image=> Adjust=> Invert.

7. Click filter=> noise=> add noise.

  • amount= 40%
  • Distribution = uniform
  • monochromatic checked.

8. Click Filter=> Blur=> Radial Blur

  • amount = 60
  • method = zoom
  • quality = good.


9. Click image=> adjust=> hue saturation

  • check colorize
  • hue = 125
  • saturation = 25
  • lightness = -10

10. Set the layer mode to Linear Light.

11. Right click on your top layer and select blending options. Check Drop shadow and make the following drop shadow settings.

  • blend mode = multiply
  • opacity= 50 %
  • angle 107
  • distance = 5 px
  • spread = 35 %
  • size = 92 px
