Mastering Selections 1: Marquee tools

The Marquee Tools
- Rectangular Marquee
- Elliptical Marquee
Rectangular marquee 1. Open the farm building image. 2. Select
the Rectangular marquee tool.

When you select the rectangular marquee you will see the marquee options
tool bar. These options are identical for each of the marquee tools, however
some of the options are disabled for some of the marquee tools. Set the
Rectangular marquee to

New
Selection
- feather= 0
- anti alias is not available for this tool
- style = normal

Use the Rectangular marquee tool to select the front window. Start at the
upper left hand corner by clicking and holding down the left mouse button.
Drag the mouse cursor over to the lower right corner of the brick wall and
let go. You will now see "Marching Ants" around your selection.

Use the rectangular marquee set to "Subtract from
selection"
to remove the left and right sides of the window that are brick. (holding
the alt key down while selecting will subtract from the selection as
well.) Click in the corner of the white and drag if down and to the left
to let go on the left side, and click in the white corner and drag to the
bottom and right and let go. 5. Click image=> crop. Click layer=> new=>
Layer from background.

Add layer mask button on the bottom of the image.
7. Save your image as rectwindow.gif, by clicking save optimized as and
selecting transparent gif with 16 colors

Elliptical Marquee 1. Open the Country House image. 2. Select
the Elliptical marquee tool. Set the Elliptical marquee to

New
Selection
- feather= 0
- anti alias is checked
- style =Fixed Size (you could draw it out in normal, but this gives
you some experience in fixed size.)
- width =64
- height= 84

Use the Elliptical marquee tool to select the round front door window. Click
in your canvas. Use you elliptical marquee tool to move the selection by
clicking inside the selection, hold your left mouse button down and drag the
selection to exactly where you want it, around the window You will now
see "Marching Ants" around your selection.

Use the rectangular marquee set to "Add to selection" to add the rest of
the doorway .
(holding the shift key down while selecting will also add to the
selection as well.) Click at the widest part of the doorway on the left
and drag your marquee tool down to the bottom right. This will add to
your selection 5. Click image=> crop. Click layer=> new=> Layer from
background. 6. Add layer mask button on the bottom of the image.

Save your image as rectwindow.gif, by clicking save optimized as and
selecting transparent gif with 16 colors
