Center Point selections
This is a lessons in how to make basic selections using the rectangular
and elliptical marquee tool.
You will need
tiles,
Stained Glass,
Garden Globe to work on
this lesson.
Selections types
Geometric selections
-
Rectangular marquee will make selections of rectangular areas
- Elliptical marquee makes oval or elliptical selections.
- Single row marquee Creates a single row of pixel selections
- Single column marquee tool lets you select a 1 pixel column.
Freehand selections

Lasso tool makes freehand selections
- Polygonal Lasso makes freehand selections with straight line sides.
- Magnetic lasso makes freehand selections where the selection snaps to
edges.
Color based selections
- Magic wand selects areas of the same color within a tolerance of a
particular color.
Starting the project: Open a new image by clicking file=> new. Set the
following:
- Select Image Preset size of 640 by 480
- Resolution = 72
- mode= RGB
- contents = white.
Move a selection
1. Open your
tile image file.
2. Select the rectangular marquee by hitting M and toggling through
the marquees by holding shift key down while hitting M.
3. Click in the upper left corner of the book and drag your rectangular
marquee to the lower right corner and release.
4. Position the image so that you can see both the tile and the new
image, with the tile in the foreground. Put your cursor inside the marquee and drag the selection to the right
to reposition it new canvas and drop it. Move it on the new canvas to the
center.
5. Click select=> deselect
Move a selection border during creation
1. Use the zoom tool
to zoom in on the oval. Select the oval marquee tool, shift M.
2. Click over the oval and start dragging to make your selection. Before
you release the mouse button, hold down the space bar to move the selection
right over the oval while in the middle of drawing. Notice how the selection
moves as you drag with the shift key depressed.
3. Release the space bar without releasing the mouse, and finish drawing
your selection. If prior to completing your selection you need to move it
more, hold the spacebar down and move it more.
4.Select your move tool, and position your documents so you can see both
the stained glass and the new image at the same time. Drag the stained glass
oval onto your new image and position over your tiles.
5. Click select=> deselect.
Selecting a center point.
1. Using the zoom tool, zoom in on the Globe image to about 300 (depending
on your screen) OR you can use the Navigator Window to zoom in. To open
Navigator go to Windows>navigator and mark it.

.Select the Eclipse Tool by clicking on Shift>M OR click on the Rectangular
Marquee Tool on the Tool Bar and hold down the small arrow at the bottom
right corner.
3. On the Options Bar make sure Feather is 0 and style is Normal.

4. Place your cursor in the center of the Globe and drag until you see
the circle selection.
- Holding the Space bar at the same time moves the circle around until
you are satisfied with the position.

Holding the Alt key at the same time centers the selection
from where you first started it.
- Holding the Shift key at the same time gives the circle a uniform
shape.
5. You must hold your mouse down during the drawing while you make
adjustments to it. Once you let go you can move the drawing around but you
can not reshape it.
6. Select your move tool, and position your documents so you can see both
the glass globe and the new image at the same time. Drag the Glass Globe
selection onto your new image and position it on the lower right corner of
your stained glass.
7. Click select=> deselect.
9. Use the crop tool to crop the white off the image.
