Working With Selections 3

Magic Wand | Lasso | Transforming  | Magnetic lasso

Selecting With Magic Wand

1. Open your image.

2. Select the magic wand.

3. On the options bar set the tolerance to 50. Tolerance controls how many similar tones of color are selected along with the current pixel you click on. The default value of 32 indicates that the closest 32 darker colors, and closest 32 lighter colors will also be select along with the one touched pixel. Check contiguous.

4. Use the magic want to select the black wall and window frame outline of the image. Notice how all connecting black is selection.

5. Hold your control key down to change to the cut and move options and drag the selection to overlap the upper left corner image of the alligator so you can see the gator through the window..

8. Click select=>Deselect, and then file=>save

Selecting with the Lasso tool

1. Select the zoom tool and click on the fence image until the view enlarges to 100% so that the entire pen is visible.

2. Select the lasso tool. Start tracing out the fence starting at the upper left and working clockwise, all the while holding down your mouse button. Work carefully around the rounded area of the top of the fence.

3. At the corner: While still holding down the mouse button, press your alt key and release the mouse. You now can continue on the straight area with the polygonal lasso. Click to a new point making a straightline selection, all the while holding the alt key.

4. When you get to a rounded area, Hold your mouse button down and release the alt to start drawing with the lasso again along the bottom.

5. When you return to the straight line side hold the mouse down, depress the alt key and release mouse to draw with polygonal lasso again.

6. Continue tracing around the image in this way until the selection is closed and complete at the starting point or just across the starting point. Release the alt and mouse button.

7. Drag this to your black window frame and overlap the images below.  Do not deselect


Transforming a selection

3. Select Edit=> Transform=> Scale. This will then display a bounding box around the fence.

4. Grab the right side of the fence and drag it to the width of the windowframe. Apply the transformation by clicking the check on the options bar or hitting enter.

5. Use the move tool to reposition the fence until you are happy with it and then click select=> deselect.

6. Save your file.

Selecting with magnetic lasso

1. Select the zoom tool and click on the cowboy until it is about 200%.

2. Select the Magnetic Lasso tool by holding shift down and clicking the L key until it is selected.

3.  Click once on the edge of the cowboy. trace around the edge of the cowboy. Notice how the selection follows the edge of the padlock.Some turning points may require you click to set a point.

4. When you get to your starting point again, double click to close the selection.

5. Double click the hand tool to fit to screen.

6. Select the move tool and drag the coyboy to the right or left side of the windowframe.

7. Click select=> deselect.

8. Click File=> save.
