Spot
Colors for Printing
Printing in full color can be very expensive and alternately you can
select one or two colors to print in, yet retain the full tonal detail of
the image. In this exercise, you will create the poster on the right.
1. Open your image. Select the channels palette.
2. View the individual channels to see which ones give you the best
detail. We will select the channel with the most detail to adjust our image
to grayscale. Click back on the RGB channel.
3. Select the magic wand tool, W, and set it to a tolerance of 100,
contiguous checked. Click in the white cloud area in the sky.

Click the Save selection as channel button on the bottom of the channels
palette. Double click the alpha channel and name the new channel sky. Click
back on the RGB channel.Click back on the background layer on the layers palette.

Click the select menu and go select=> load selection. Set the select to
- sky
- invert checked
- operation = New Selection

While you have the RGB channel selected, Click Image=> adjust=> channel
mixer. Here we will mix the channels in grayscale to get the best percentage
of each color for the building.
Set the source channel to
- RED
- Preview checked
- Red= 100%
- Check monochrome (The output channel uptop changes automatically from
red to gray then.)
- Slide the green to around +20 to improve the color contrasts.
Click ok.
7. Click the select menu and go select=> load selection. Select the sky
channel as a new selection, but do not check invert.
8. Click Image=> adjust=> channel mixer. Set the channel to
- Red
- red = 100%
- green = 10%
- blue =0
- monochrome

Click Select=> deselect. Click Image=> Mode=> Grayscale.

Click Image=> Adjustment=> Levels. We will set the levels of grayscale to
attain the closest to a normal histogram curve with 5% of the pixels being
black and 5% of the pixels being white to help with the contrast using the K
value of CMYK color.

Double click the set white point eye dropper to bring up the color picker.
Set the
- C = 0
- M = 0
- Y = 0
- K = 5%.
Click ok.

Double click the Set black point eye dropper to bring up the color picker.
Set the
- C = 0
- M = 0
- Y = 0
- K = 95%.
Click ok.
13. With the black dropper, select the black in the van window. Click
once on the set white point dropper and select the lighter area in the sky.
Click ok.

Click Filter=> sharpen=> unsharp mask. Set the
- amount = 60%
- radius = 1.0
- threshold = 0
15. On the channels palette click the flyout menu and select the spot
color channel.

Click on the color swatch on the new spot color dialogue box. Select the
custom button on the color picker box. Set the BOOK to pantone solid coated. Set the color to pantone 139 C by
typing in 139 quickly on your keyboard, even though there is no text box to
type in. Click ok. Set the solidity to 100%. Ok the dialogue box.
17.
Click on the gray channel. Click Select=> all. Click Edit cut.
18. Click on the Pantone 139C channel and click Edit=> paste. Click on
the background layer on the layers palette.
19. Set the following guides by clicking view=> new guide for each.
- Horizontal 15 px
- Horizontal 330 px
- Vertical 15 px
- vertical 285 px.
20. On the channels palette click the flyout menu and select the spot
color channel. Click on the color swatch on the new spot color dialogue box.
Select the custom button on the color picker box. Set the color to pantone
364 C by typing in 364 quickly on your keyboard. Click ok. Set the solidity to 100%. Ok the dialogue
box. Drag the spot channel so it is above the pantone 139 spot channel so
the stacking order of the channels is
- gray
- pantone 364 c
- pantone 139 c
- sky
21. Click back on the pantone 139 spot channel. Use the rectangular
marquee to select area bordered by the 4 guides. Click Select=> inverse.
22. Set your default colors and with your pantone 139 C spot
channel selected, hit your delete key.
23. Click on the Pantone 364 C spot channel and hold alt down and hit
delete to fill the selected area. Hide your guides by clicking view=> show=>
uncheck guides. Click Select=> Deselect.

24.
Select your type tool. Set the type tool to
- Font = Monotype corsiva (listed in the C's in photoshop)
- size = 40 pt
- style = regular
- tracking = 50
- Small caps
- black
- smooth

Type
in the word Holy Cross in the white area of the sky.
25. Select the move tool and move to center it vertically in the white
cloud area. Click select=> Deselect.
26. Select the line tool, U, set to draw "Fill pixels" at 2 pixel width. Draw a
black line while holding the shift key down, on the channel above and below
the words of equal length.
27. Click Select=> all. Click Edit=> stroke. Set the stroke to
- width =4 pixel
- color= white
- location = inside.
28. Click Edit=> Stroke. Set this stroke to
- width = 3 pixel
- color = black
- Location = inside.

29. Select your type tool and set it to
- Font = Monotype Corsiva
- Style = regular
- Size = 24 pt
- White
- Small caps
- Center
Click
in the green area below and type in "Student Union Building"
30. Select your line tool set to 2 px white, draw pixels. Draw a
separator line in white on the spot channel right under the student union
building text. Hold your shift key as you draw to make the line horizontal.
31. Type in your fictitious address below in 14 point white text.
Your done! A printer will easily be able to separate this into the two
pantone colors and print it!
