MANIPULATING TEXT WITH PATHS--STRAIGHT LINES

by Ruby Tuesday

In this tutorial we will work with paths on text to alter it. We will alter parts of the text along straight lines to convert it from the before picture to the after picture below.

before

before

after

after

1. Open Photoshop, reset palette locations, reset all tools, default colors.

2. Open a new image 1000 pixels x 1000 pixels, 72 ppi, RGB, white.

3. Double click the hand on the tool bar to "fit to screen".
4. Select the type tool (T).

5. Open character palette.

6. In the character palette, choose Arial, Italic, 200 pt, Smooth, Centered. NOTE: When working with different fonts, if italic or bold are not available options, you can choose from faux bold and/or faux italic, which are selections just above the language dropdown menu.

7. In the center of your canvas, type the word "Next".

8. Go to Layer > Type > Create Work Path.

9. Turn the eye off on the type layer in the layers palette and go to the paths palette.

10. Double click on the work path in the paths palette and name this path, Next.

11. Zoom in to about 150% and move the word so that you can see all of the N.

12. Select the Path Selection tool (black arrow) and click on just the outline of the N. You will see the anchor points that are already there. We are going to make more.

13. Select the Add Anchor Point tool nested with the pen tool and click on the right up and down section of the N about the width of the letter down to create a new anchor point on the path.

14. Change to the Convert Point tool , also nested with the pen tool, and click on this point again.

15. Now change to the Direct Selection tool (white arrow) and click on the top corner anchor point so that it is selected.

16. Drag this point out until it is directly in line with the left edge of the crossbar of the t.

17. You now have a long point going across above the lower case e & x. You can leave it like this if you like the point or to square it off, which we are going to do, select the Add Anchor Point tool again and click on the lower line of this point.

18. Next go back to the Convert Point tool and click on your new anchor point. Then select the Direct Selection tool to move the point out so that the right line is parallel with the N or you can make it straight up and down as you like.

19. Click somewhere on the canvas but off the path and do the same thing with the lower left side of the N to make it go outward to the left a little.

20. Next, using the direct Selection tool, click anywhere on the canvas but off the paths. Then click on the top right corner of the bottom of the t and shift click on the bottom right corner of the same area.

21. Then click on the section of path between them and hold down and drag it straight to the right. You may have to click on one corner and the next to get the stretched out area of the t exactly straight.

22. Save work as textpaths.psd .
