Wood Cut

1. Open the image you would like to make into a brush. I used this image from the web. You can simple open it up and right click on it and select copy. (You will not be using this image as is and will not violate the copyright as it will be changed nearly completely) Click File=> New and then ok to open up an image of the same size. Click Edit => Paste.

2. Magnify the image about 200-300 %. Using the magic wand set at a tolerance of 35, check contiguous, select the pixels outside the image and hit the backspace key. Delete al the pixels outside the main image this way.
3. Select the eraser tool, and the smallest hard brush (1px) set to 100% and wet edges. Use short strokes along the outside of the image at right angles to the image to cause a feather like appearance. folow the light colors up in the waves and/or clouds to highlight the texture.

4. Click Image=Image Size. Resize the image to 450 high

5. Click Filter=>Sharpen, Unsharp Mask.

  • amount = 255
  • radius = 25
  • Threshold= 70

.6.  Click Edit=> Define Brush

. Name the brush wolf moon and click ok.

7. Create a new file about 400 by 300 RGB white, 72 ppi. Set forground color to black y hitting the D key.
8. Using a soft brush, 5 pixels, 45% pressure, wet edges, draw several random horizontal lines.
9. Click Filter=>Blur-> Gausian Blur. Apply a Gaussian blur at 3.5.

10 Click Filter=> Blur=>Motion Blur. Set the blur at 0 degrees for 85 pixels.
11. Click Filter=>distort=>wave

  • generators= 1
  • wavelength = 30, 30
  • amplitude= 60,60
  • scale = 10,10
  • type = sine

12. Click Filter=> sharpen=> Unsharp Mask

  • ammount = 50%
  • Radius =250
  • Threshold = 20.

 

13. Click Edit=> Define brush. Name it waves.

 

14. Open a new Image size 1000 wide by 800 high, rgb, 72ppi, white.

15. Click Edit=> Fill and set to

  • Pattern
  • fill pattern = wood,  which came as a default for photoshop 6.
  • Blending = normal
  • opacity = 100%

16. Insert a new layer. Select your elliptical marquee tool. Set the marquee options to feather = 30. Select an oval on your new layer that is not quite as wide or high as your image. (400 high by 900 wide is good)

17. Select your paint brush tool. Find the brush for wave which you created above. click the brush options and set the brush to 140 % spacing. Set your color palette to hex #663300. Check Wet edges.

18. Drag your brush around the edges of your marquee, overlapping the edges and then through the middle.

Click Select => deselect.
 

20. Change your brush to the wolf moon created above. Using the same settings as the wave, line the wolf moon up so that the lines through the bottom of the moon are right on the top of the waves and paint one copy.

21. Double click this layer to bring up layer styles.

  • Set the advanced blending options to 50% opacity


22. click Bevel emboss and use the following settings:

  • style = pillow emboss
  • technique= chisel soft
  • depth = 530%
  • direction = up
  • size = 13 px
  • soften = 0
  • shading angle = 120
  • altitude = 30
  • gloss contour = Half round
  • Highlight mode= screen
  • Highlight color =#CF6801

23. Type The words "Howling Moon" in a bold Georgia font size 72 point. color ##663300.

24. Right click on your layer 1 and select copy layer style. Right click on your type layer and paste layer style.
